On 1 January 2026, the new SNPS pension came into effect. The SNPS pension was already largely based on the principles of the new pension legislation. As a result, much has remained the same. You participate in SNPS if you joined Shell on or after 1 July 2013.
What changes and what stays the same?
We have set out what has changed and what remains the same.

This is what stays the same for you if you are currently working at Shell. Also for the Net Pension Scheme.
Both you and Shell pay monthly contributions, which SNPS invests. Therefore, your pension pot may grow if investments do well but could also decrease if they do less well. This means that the amount you will receive each month when you retire is not set. You will still be able to choose a fixed or variable pension.
SNPS is not led by short-term developments but invests for the long term. This strategy helps us limit risks and increase the chance of a positive return. Click the link to read more about how your pension is invested.
Go to my-Shellpension to see your expected pension benefit. It is calculated on the basis of economic scenarios published by DNB (Dutch Central Bank). They show how investments and interest rates are expected to develop in the future. But: you will only know what your actual pension benefit is when you retire.
We can invest your pension pot based on one of the following three risk profiles: defensive (less risk), neutral or offensive (more risk). Use the Investment Balance on my-Shellpension to decide which profile is best for you.
If you don’t choose a profile, we will invest your pension pot based on the neutral risk profile.
In the year you turn 58, you will make a preliminary choice: you will opt for a variable pension with SNPS or a fixed benefit via an external pension administrator. A variable pension is expected to pay out more than a fixed pension. However, when times are tough, a variable pension could pay out less. You will finalise your choice for a fixed or variable benefit when you retire.
The amount of pension you receive will depend on your accrued pension capital and the interest rates. If interest rates increase, you will buy a higher pension benefit with the same capital. If the interest rate is dropping, the pension benefit you can buy will drop too.
If you choose a variable pension, we will purchase your pension over a 10-year period, starting in the year you turn 58. This decreases your dependence on the interest rates applicable at a particular time. What happens if you choose a fixed benefit? Starting in the year you turn 58, we will invest your pension pot in life cycles until your retirement date. We will reduce the risk level of our investments as you get closer to your retirement date.

This is what changes for you from 1 January 2026 if you are currently employed at Shell.
Shell contributes 21% towards your pension accrual. On top of that, you choose your own contribution. This is set at 7% by default, but you can choose to increase or decrease your contribution from a minimum of 2% to a maximum of 9%. You can adjust your choice at any time. If you do not make a choice, your own contribution remains at 7%. You will be able to submit your choice via the Shell HR portal.
Previously, Shell paid more premium as you got older. This will change in the new scheme. The percentage that Shell contributes will be the same for all ages. You may have a disadvantage from this. Shell has determined whether and how much compensation you receive based on your year of birth.
If you are entitled to compensation, you will receive this on top of your salary. You will also receive an additional supplement in the compensation. This puts you in a similar position with new colleagues who will be employed after 1 January 2026. This extra amount you receive on top of your salary you can invest yourself in building up your pension. That is an option, but what you do with the compensation is up to you.
This compensation stops as soon as you retire or employment ends (and at the latest until the age of 68). You are only eligible for this compensation if you are employed at the time of the transition to the new scheme on 1 January 2026. Are you entitled to compensation? Then you will receive a message from Shell HR before the end of the year. Are you retiring or leaving employment before 1 January 2026? Then you are not entitled to compensation.
Partner's pension
If you die, and you are still employed by Shell, your partner will receive a pension.
The amount of the partner's pension used to depend on how long you had worked somewhere. Now, it will be a fixed percentage of your salary.
Orphan's pension
Your children will receive an orphan’s pension if you die while still employed by Shell. They will receive this pension until they reach the age of 25.
Are you about to retire?
The individual choices you make when you retire will apply.
The disability pension will become an addition to Shell's existing sickness and reintegration policy. From now on, this will be arranged directly via your employer and is no longer part of the SNPS pension scheme. You will still accrue pension with the fund, but you no longer pay a premium for this.
Are you (partially) incapacitated for work? Shell Pension will notify you about this.
Every year, the government decides the age at which people will start to receive AOW benefit. This is announced five years in advance. As the statutory retirement age changes with some regularity, the new scheme allows you to apply for your pension up to 10 years before the statutory retirement age applicable at that time. On svb.nl you can check your statutory retirement age.
Are you around the age of 55 and about to retire (part-time)? If so, it is wise to consider what this change

Your partner will still be properly insured
If you die, and you are still employed by Shell, your partner will receive a pension. The amount of the partner's
pension used to depend on how long you had worked somewhere. Now, it will be a fixed percentage of your salary. Are
you leaving Shell and don’t have a new job? Your partner's pension will continue to be insured for three months. You
can extend the number of months if you want.
Orphan's pension
In the new scheme your children will not receive an orphan’s pension if you die.
The disability pension will be arranged via your employer from now on.
The disability pension will become an addition to Shell Netherlands’ existing sickness and reintegration policy. It

You are receiving a variable pension. If you have a variable pension, we continue to invest for you after you retire. This enables you to profit from positive investments even after your retirement date.
Every year, your pension benefit is adjusted in line with the investment results achieved.
Your pension benefit will fluctuate depending on the investment results achieved. To prevent major fluctuations in the amount of your benefit, the results achieved are spread over five years. The results are reflected in your pension benefits on 1 July of the following year. If you have chosen a fixed-increasing or fixed-decreasing benefit, this will be reflected in your pension benefit on 1 July every year too.
When will you be notified of the amount of your new pension benefit?
In July each year, we will inform you how investment results are to be distributed and how your pension benefit will be adjusted. You will find this message in your Archive on
my-Shellpension.
We will transfer your pension from SNPS to your bank account on about the 25th of each month. You will find the payment dates on shellpensioen.nl.
